BISMARCK – U.S. Senator and Senate Armed Services Committee (SASC) member Kevin Cramer (R-ND) issued the following statement today on the establishment of the U.S. Space Command:

“The United States is the best in the world at space, and our adversaries know it. Our capabilities in space provide our military forces with significant advantages, which is why our enemies target this domain. I applaud President Trump and his administration for acting quickly to maintain our dominance in space, and I look forward to working with my colleagues in Congress to finish the job of establishing a modernized, independent, and fully functional Space Force.”

In June, the Senate confirmed General John Raymond as the Combatant Commander of U.S. Space Command (USSPACECOM). Senator Cramer met with him before his confirmation to stress the importance of an independent U.S. Space Force to meet emerging challenges and to protect our assets in space.

Senator Cramer, the first North Dakotan to serve on SASC, successfully led the effort to include three amendments in the Senate-passed National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA) to better align the legislation with the Department of Defense’s proposal. He also wrote an op-ed urging Congress to adopt the President’s plan.
