BISMARCK – U.S. Senator Kevin Cramer (R-ND) met with the North Dakota chapter of the Backcountry Hunters & Anglers (BHA) today.

“We discussed legislation to help find a cure for Chronic Wasting Disease,” said Senator Cramer. “I assured them their voice had been heard and highlighted the bills I support to address this issue.”

Chronic Wasting Disease (CWD) is a contagious neurological disease affecting elk, deer, and moose. It causes degeneration of the brains of infected animals resulting in abnormal behavior, loss of bodily functions, and eventually death. Senator Cramer is a cosponsor of The Chronic Wasting Disease Research Act and the Chronic Wasting Disease Transmission in Cervidae Study Act, bills which aim to obtain additional data and therapeutics to prevent, vaccinate for, and even cure CWD in wild and farmed herds. Senator Cramer supports the effort to address the rapid spread of this disease while protecting wildlife and sportsmen’s priorities.

“We also discussed private property rights as it relates to hunting,” added Senator Cramer. “Regardless of whether it is a hunter accidentally stumbling onto another’s land or a bureaucrat who wants to forcefully take legally-owned land, private property is still private property. Land owners have a constitutional right to own and protect their land, and I will continue to support efforts to protect that right.”
