BISMARCK – U.S. Senator Kevin Cramer (R-ND), member of the Senate Environment and Public Works Committee, delivered remarks at the Basin Electric Annual Meeting today, highlighting carbon capture technology, greenhouse gas emission regulations, and current legislation before Congress.

“North Dakota is leading the way in the development of clean, reliable energy by investing and applying carbon capture technologies to lignite, oil, and ethanol facilities. The Biden Administration has put a target on coal country and domestic energy production, when we are part of the solution. Basin Electric has been a wonderful partner in expanding access to affordable, reliable, and responsible energy and I look forward to continuing our work together,” said Senator Cramer

Senator Cramer is a cosponsor of multiple pieces of legislation supporting 45Q, such as the Coordinated Action to Capture Harmful (CATCH) Emissions Act, a bipartisan bill to improve the 45Q Carbon Capture Utilization and Storage (CCUS) tax credit, and the Carbon Capture Utilization and Storage Tax Credit Amendments Act, legislation to ensure producers get the maximum potential out of CCUS credits.

Senator Cramer worked with North Dakota’s energy producers and utilities to get the Trump Administration to issue guidance clarifying how carbon capture tax credits can be used. After it was finally proposed, North Dakota energy leaders thanked Senator Cramer for his work and joined him in offering statements supporting the proposal. Now, the senator is working with his colleagues to keep these credits available and ensure they can be used to their fullest potential. Earlier this year, the senator hostedEnvironmental Protection Agency (EPA) Administrator Michael Regan in the state to hear directly from environmental and energy leaders on their efforts.
