WASHINGTON – U.S. Senator and Senate Armed Services Committee (SASC) member Kevin Cramer (R-ND) met with Vice Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff nominee General John Hyten.
“We discussed the importance of Space Force, the Arctic Mission, and Ground-Based Strategic Deterrence. General Hyten’s background and understanding of these issues makes him an asset both to our nation and to our state’s military community,” said Senator Cramer. “I look forward to working with him once he is confirmed.”
During General Hyten’s SASC nomination hearing, Senator Cramer announced his support for the General’s confirmation. He also pressed him on the need for the Ground-Based Strategic Deterrence (GBSD) program to stay on time despite Boeing’s decision to withdraw from the bidding process. GBSD will replace the Minutemen III missiles which are housed in Minot.
“With the back out of Boeing from this process,” Senator Cramer asked, “does that raise concerns for you, and is there any reason that should deter us from continuing down the path we are on?”
“I always get concerned when competition disappears from America,” responded General Hyten. “If I am confirmed as Vice Chairman, I will look into that in detail.”
