WASHINGTON—U.S. Senator Kevin Cramer (R-ND) questioned U.S. Secretary of Energy Rick Perry and U.S. Under Secretary for Nuclear Security and Administrator Lisa Gordon-Hagerty about nuclear warhead modernization efforts during a Senate Armed Services Committee hearing on atomic energy defense programs.

“Let me focus on something very important to my state of North Dakota: warhead modernization efforts,” said Senator Cramer during the hearing. “Those at Minot are depending on getting the new warheads on schedule so they can continue providing the strategic deterrence our country and our allies need.”

“All five modernization programs are currently on cost and on schedule, and they are completely aligned with our customer: the Department of Defense,” responded Under Secretary Gordon-Hagerty.

“I’m comfortable the funding stream is appropriate,” said Secretary Perry, though both officials noted efforts to denuclearize North Korea could affect current funding.
