BISMARCK – U.S. Senator Kevin Cramer (R-ND), the Ranking Member on the Senate Environment and Public Works (EPW) Subcommittee on Transportation and Infrastructure, issued the following statement on President Biden unveiling a $2 trillion spending package today:
“By using one of the most bipartisan policies in Congress – infrastructure - as a tool for much more partisan goals like climate and taxes, I worry President Biden will squander whatever remaining good will he has with Republicans.
“I am open to expanding the Highway Trust Fund by finding a way to expand revenues with some sort of equitable user fee that accounts for more energy efficient vehicles and electric vehicles, and I would welcome easing regulations that lower the cost of developing everything from highways and bridges to transmission lines, pipelines, export terminals, rail facilities, and broadband connectivity, and more, which will make tax dollars go further and attract much more in private investment.
“If Democrats insist on adding to the federal debt, it would be better used for infrastructure that provides an asset to move commerce while creating jobs in its construction and maintenance than just giving it away to nonproductive activity.”
Senator Cramer has been a major proponent of bipartisan infrastructure legislation, such as the Drinking Water and Wastewater Infrastructure Act, which EPW unanimously passed last week. The senator is also leading a bipartisan bill with Senator Amy Klobuchar (D-MN) to support small broadband providers.
Last Congress, Senator Cramer helped craft water infrastructure legislation and the highway reauthorization bill which EPW unanimously approved. As the committee builds on that work, the senator has been a strong proponent of maintaining the current funding formula which ensures small states with expansive infrastructure systems like North Dakota receive proper funding. The senator discussed this and ensuring infrastructure reform is properly funded at an EPW hearing in February. Click here to watch.
