WASHINGTON – U.S. Senator Kevin Cramer (R-N.D.) joined Senator Marco Rubio (R-FL) in reintroducing a constitutional amendment to keep the number of Justices on the Supreme Court of the United States at nine.

“Democrats have repeatedly promised to fundamentally alter a co-equal branch of government by adding Justices to the Supreme Court until there were enough liberals to make a majority,” said Senator Cramer. “Court-packing undermines the Court’s integrity, threatens the independence of the judiciary. It’s another example of Democrats trying to upend our institutions and change the rules because they don’t like the outcome, with blatant disregard for the consequences of their actions. Our amendment takes this dangerous plan off the table.”

Senator Cramer cosponsored this amendment when it was first introduced on March 25, 2019. The Supreme Court has had nine seats since 1869.

Senators Cramer and Rubio are joined on the amendment by Senators Marsha Blackburn (R-TN), Todd Young (R-IN), Mitt Romney (R-UT), Mike Crapo (R-ID), Pat Toomey (R-PA), Shelley Moore Capito (R-WV), Thom Tillis (R-NC), Rob Portman (R-OH), and John Cornyn (R-TX).
