BISMARCK – U.S. Senator Kevin Cramer (R-ND), a Senate Armed Services Committee (SASC) member, announced today the Air Force is advising the public of its intent to prepare an Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) for the Ground Based Strategic Deterrent (GBSD) basing action and Minuteman III demilitarization at the Minot Air Force Base.

“An Environmental Impact Statement is necessary to keep nuclear modernization efforts moving forward,” said Senator Cramer. “Minot residents should make themselves aware of the details and be ready to work with the Air Force as needed.”

According to the Air Force, the EIS will assess the potential environmental consequences of the proposal of GBSD, which will modernize and replace Minuteman III flight systems, weapon system command and control, and launch systems. Senator Cramer has been working closely with Defense Department officials to keep these efforts on track.

To effectively define the full range of issues and concerns to be evaluated in the EIS, the Air Force is soliciting scoping comments from interested local, state, and federal agencies and interested members of the public. The Air Force invites interested parties to review the scoping materials and submit comments online atwww.gbsdeis.com by November 13.
